Prison and immigration detention volunteer vacancies

The Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) is seeking volunteers from all backgrounds to become members of local Boards monitoring prisons, immigration removal centres and short-term holding facilities.

As an IMB member, you will play an important role in ensuring that people in detention are treated fairly, respectfully and in line with recognised standards. IMBs are independent of the Prison Service, Home Office and other authorities, providing impartial oversight and reporting on conditions and treatment. 

No specific qualifications or experience are required. We are looking for people with good judgement, a commitment to fairness and the ability to work as part of a team. Training and ongoing support are provided.

This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to public service, develop new skills and help improve transparency and accountability within places of detention.

We particularly welcome applications from people from a wide range of backgrounds, communities and life experiences, including those currently underrepresented on our Boards.

Time commitment: Approximately two to three days per month.

Location: Opportunities are available at prisons, immigration removal centres and short-term holding facilities across England and Wales.
