CLINKS BLOG: talking about small charities
In this guest blog Emma Wells, National Secretary at Community Chaplaincy Association, talks about her reasons for recently joining the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3) and what she hopes it can achieve. Emma has experience and expertise in working with small voluntary organisations, having worked both in prisons and in the community with prisoners and their families, and brings this to her role on the RR3. The RR3 is a platform for leaders from the voluntary sector to engage with the Ministry of Justice, chaired by Clinks. Find out more here
CLINKS EVENT: working with women in the criminal justice system
Do you run services designed for women in the criminal justice system? This event [13th November, Liverpool, £15 members/£30 non-members], in partnership with Agenda, is for CEOs and project managers. At this forum, Clare Jones will talk about getting closer to shared purpose commissioning. Clare is an independent consultant with 20 years of experience working nationally to promote better service design and delivery for women facing multiple disadvantages. She will introduce ways of working with commissioners to find shared purpose that will enable collaborative, relational and integrated approaches to commissioning women-centred services. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: vulnerable children and drug smuggling
St Giles Trust has published a scoping report into county lines, which finds that although awareness is growing, full understanding and identification of the phenomenon and the aspect of exploitation of vulnerable children seems very variable across and within different geographical areas and organisations. It is linked to an evaluation report, which looked into the six-month Home Office-funded County Lines Demonstration Pilot St Giles Trust delivered in Kent helping vulnerable young people out of county line activity. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: sentencing young adults
A report entitled Sentencing Young Adults: Making the case for sentencing principles for young adults from The Howard League and Transition to Adulthood (T2A) Alliance argues that formal sentencing principles for young adults aged 18 to 25, similar to the Sentencing Council guidelines in place for children, would assist the courts and improve sentencing outcomes. The report draws on Howard League's participation work with young adults and sets out how principled guidelines would help judges and magistrates to understand young adults better, and provide a legal framework to achieve better sentencing decisions. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: preventing hepatitis
Adfam has published a booklet designed to support the families of people diagnosed with hepatitis C deal with the emotional, practical and financial realities. In 2015, hepatitis C was the most common infection amongst people who inject drugs. Around two in five people who inject drugs are living with chronic hepatitis C. Read the booklet here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: Victims' Strategy
The government has launched its first cross-departmental victims’ strategy. The strategy aims to strengthen the support that victims can access, commits to delivering a victims’ law, and intends to make victims feel better acknowledged, understood and protected in the criminal justice system. The government will consult on the detail of a victims' code and a victims' law, which will underpin the code. Proposals include strengthening compliance and the powers of the Victims’ Commissioner to better hold the government to account. Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER'S EVENT: complex commissioning for complex needs
The Academy for Social Justice Commissioning is holding an evening seminar on Complex commissioning for complex needs [6th November, Manchester, free]. According to research by the Lankelly Chase Foundation around 60,000 people in England experience multiple and complex needs. The Big Lottery Fund has invested £112m over eight years to fund partnerships of local organisations to work together and improve services for people with such needs.
