CLINKS NEWS: an insider's view of prison and probation
Clinks’ event An insider’s view of prisons and probation had an audience of over 100, a majority of which were from the City of London’s livery companies and other charitable trusts, who enjoyed performances from Clinks’ members and stalls with information and demonstrations of members work. The Secretary of State for Justice, David Gauke, spoke about the importance of the voluntary sector to the Ministry of Justice and our CEO Anne Fox talked about the range of services provided by our members. Taking place in the Hall of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, the evening gave a taste of the inspirational work of the voluntary sector in criminal justice and the challenges it faces, in order to encourage support. CLINKS BLOG: what's on the horizon for women's services?
Clinks Policy Officer, Lauren Nickolls, discusses whether the Ministry of Justice’s (MoJ) programme to review probation will address the issues women-centred services have faced under Transforming Rehabilitation (TR). She writes "The women’s voluntary sector is made up of small, specialist organisations and the TR reforms have hit them particularly hard [...] It is important that the MoJ’s programme to review probation considers the distinct needs of women and ensures a gender and trauma-informed approach when designing the new system." CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: foreign national women in prison
The Prison Reform Trust has published an updated report on foreign national women in prison called Still No Way Out, based on evidence gathered by Hibiscus. Foreign national women are overrepresented in the women’s prison population and despite the introduction of a defence for victims of modern slavery, there is evidence that these victims continue to be prosecuted for crimes they were forced to commit. The report found that support for foreign national women whilst in prison, such as interpreting and immigration legal advice, varies considerably and resettlement support is generally poor. Foreign national women are often excluded from resettlement and rehabilitation services run by the voluntary sector due to funding restrictions and barriers to statutory services.
