Join ClinksShannon Trust is a national charity supporting people in the criminal justice system to learn to read, and improve other basic skills. Currently, 62% of people that end up in prison either can't read or struggle to. Shannon Trust inspires and trains prisoners who can read to teach prisoners who can’t, so they're better set up for a positive future. We also support people in prison with basic maths.
In the community, we work with partner organisations supporting people to learn to read in the same peer-led way.

    Supporting information
At the start of 2022, with limited resources, Shannon Trust was reaching about 10% of people in prison who could benefit from our support. We wanted to reach more people to help them better navigate life both inside and outside of prison. During 2022 begun to work under contract in 15 prisons. We are now delivering contracted work in 37 prisons in 2023. Where we are able to employ prison facilitators, who are dedicated to improving mentor and learner numbers through developing our programmes, we are seeing impressive results. The total number of active learners has increased by 71% since the contracts started. The average number of new learners joining the programme has more than trebled, from 14 per month pre-contract to 44 per month at the end of 2022. The average number of mentors being trained every month has more than doubled, from 12 per month pre-contract to 26 per month at the end of 2022. Our work supports reading strategies and shows commitment to Ofsted inspections.
