Supporting information
Samaritans run the Listener scheme in almost all prisons across the UK. In England the scheme is funded through a grant from NOMS. In 2012/13 we had 1,500 active Listeners, who had 84,000 meetings with fellow prisoners in emotional distress and/or with suicidal thoughts. 520 Samaritans volunteers in 92 branch prison teams trained and supported the Listeners. Samaritans also take phone calls direct from prisoners and offer a letter service.
