Join ClinksThe Forgiveness Project collects and shares stories from individuals who have rebuilt their lives following hurt and trauma. As part of our work we deliver RESTORE, an intensive, group-based programme, centred on the stories of victims and perpetrators of crime. Its overall aim is to contribute to the rehabilitation process for offenders, by preparing and supporting them emotionally to effect change in their lives both in the immediate and longer term.
It does this by:
1. Developing empathy by helping offenders understand the impact of their actions on others.
2. Opening offenders’ minds to an alternative way of viewing themselves and the world.
3. Practically supporting ex-offenders in their move away from crime and desire to make reparation.
4. Assisting victim recovery through witnessing and acknowledgement.

Supporting information
The RESTORE prison programme comes under the restorative justice/victim awareness umbrella and is aimed at adults and young people over 15 years of age. It is an intensive and sometimes challenging, five-day group based intervention. Uniquely, the courses are co-facilitated by a victim/survivor of crime and an ex-offender (who will probably have taken part in RESTORE in prison prior to release). This is preparatory restorative justice; the programme facilitates social justice, group cohesion, resilient relationships and personal healing, aiding victim recovery and responsibility in offenders.
In 2008, the charity was awarded a special commendation by the Longford Judges for our ‘remarkable work in prisons’ and in 2012, Middlesex University, Forensic Psychological Services published their independent evaluation of the programme. The findings strongly indicate that RESTORE can affect a prisoner’s attitude towards crime and therefore may have a very real effect on recidivism.
