Join ClinksClean Break uses theatre to keep the subject of women in prison on the cultural radar, helping to reveal the damage caused by the failures of the criminal justice system. Through our unique work, we raise difficult questions, inspire debate, and help to effect profound and positive change in the lives of women with experience of the criminal justice system.
Since 1979, Clean Break has been the only women’s theatre company of its kind, and we continue to inspire playwrights and captivate audiences with our ground-breaking plays on the complex theme of women and crime.
Through theatre workshops and projects in prisons and in the community which build confidence, resilience and wellbeing, we transform the lives of women who have experienced the criminal justice system or who are at risk of entering it.

Supporting information
Clean Break was established as a touring theatre company in 1979 by two women prisoners who believed in the power of theatre to change lives. Since that time Clean Break has produced groundbreaking, award winning plays that share the often hidden stories of women and crime, engaging audiences and inspiring them to be part of positive change for women offenders and women at risk of offending.
For over 18 years our education and outreach programme has supported women offenders and women at risk of offending to make and sustain positive life changes; both in prison and in the community. More than 70% of graduates from our North London-based theatre education programme move into sustained education, employment or volunteering, and in 2012 our work was recognised with a highly commended award through the Longford Prize. Our emphasis on tailored student support and strong partnerships with leading mainstream education and arts organisations are key to our success.
