Vacancy: NCJAA Support and Engagement Officer
We are looking for a Support and Engagement Officer [£27,815, remote, full time, fixed term] to support the manager of the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) to deliver and ambitious programme of work as the leading national network for arts organisations and individuals that work in the criminal justice system. Clinks: Probation reform and the voluntary sector
After gathering views of 241 voluntary organisations, including arts organisations, Clinks has published a report on the voluntary sector's experience of the probation reform programme during the commissioning of day one services. It finds the commissioning process was complex, cumbersome and bureaucratic and the financial costs of involvement were significant. Many small, specialist organisations were unable to engage with the process. The report makes nine recommendations aimed at supporting future commissioning processes. Read the report here
Artist of the Year: NCJAA member Ashleigh Nugent
Congratulations to NCJAA member Ashleigh Nugent who was crowned Artist of the Year at the Liverpool City Region Culture and Creativity Awards. The annual award celebrates an artist whose work has stood out and contributed to the cultural reputation of Liverpool. Ashleigh is an author, playwright and Creative Director of RiseUp, which aims to empower prisoners through writing, helping them to take control of their thoughts, feelings and actions.
Training: Core Skills in Coaching for Leaders and Managers

The online programme takes place across April, May and June on Zoom and is ideal for leaders or managers interested in creating new ways of thinking and developing employees’ skills. Synergy Theatre Project: Nothing in a Butterfly
29 March – 2 April 2022 | Omnibus Theatre, London | From £11
Nothing in a Butterfly is a new play about finding rock bottom on top of the world. Based on the true story of actor and playwright Ric Renton and developed with Synergy Theatre Project, Nothing in a Butterfly asks what can save people from themselves and what does it take to break the cycle of violence? The matinee on 2 April will be followed by a panel discussion exploring how plays can be made by drawing on lived experience and will include Esther Baker (Artistic Director, Synergy Theatre Project), Matt Steinberg (Artistic Director, Outside Edge theatre company) and Ric Renton. Kestrel Theatre Company: After Time

Kestrel Theatre will be screening four documentary short films about the experiences of men after they leave prison; after which there will be a Q&A with the performers and filmmaker hosted by actor Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London, Hamlet). The short films serve as a sister project to the fictional After Time monologues, written by playwright Simon Longman, and are a personal portrait as the performers reflect on their hopes and challenges since leaving prison and share their views on the criminal justice system. Grants: Steel Charitable Trust
Grants between £10,000 and £25,000 are available from the Steel Charitable Trust to charities working in areas such as arts, education or social and economic disadvantage, including within the criminal justice sector. Find out more and apply by 20 April 2022 here
Celebrating 60 Years of the Koestler Awards
The deadline for entries to the 2022 Koestler Awards for arts in criminal justice is fast approaching. The annual Awards from Koestler Arts welcome all forms of art, writing, design and music from people in secure settings and on probation. The total prize money is over £30,000. This year marks the Koestler Awards’ 60th anniversary and, to celebrate this, the exhibition of entries will be curated by internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei. Entrants may submit up to five creative works by the closing date on 7 April 2022. Entry forms and further information can be found here
