CLINKS VACANCY: Fundraising Manager
We’re seeking a Fundraising Manager to join our team [£38,606, Full time, London (currently home based)]. This role will lead on the delivery of our income generation strategy, secure grant fundraising from statutory and charitable sources and develop and manage corporate partnerships. The Fundraising Manager is also responsible for measuring and understanding the fundamental impact of the charity. We’re looking for someone with relevant, recent and substantial experience of delivery on fundraising, measurement and planning, preferably in the voluntary sector. CLINKS BLOG: Senedd elections 2021
This blog summarises the key commitments relevant to criminal justice policy in the manifestos of the three main Welsh political parties: Plaid Cymru, Welsh Labour and the Welsh Conservatives. On Thursday 6th May 2021, elections for Senedd Cymru (the Welsh Parliament) took place to elect 60 people to sit as Members of the Senedd for the next five years. We hope that this information will be useful to the voluntary sector in planning for the potential policies of the future Welsh government. Read more here
CLINKS EVENT: women in prison consultation
We are running a consultation event to inform Clinks’ response to the Justice Select Committee’s inquiry into women in prison [18th May, 10am-12pm, online, free]. The inquiry seeks to understand the progress made over the past 10 years to address female offending and reduce the number of women in custody, as well as understanding how well women’s needs are met in custody. The deadline is 7th June. We want to hear from organisations that work with, or on behalf of women in contact with the criminal justice system. Book your place here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: prisoner reintegration
The winner of this year’s Robin Corbett Award is prisoner reintegration charity, StandOut. Lady Val Corbett, Founder of the Robin Corbett Award for Prisoner Reintegration said: “We are pleased that StandOut are this year’s winners, as they work tirelessly to transform the lives of people leaving prison with on-going support to motivate them to get life on track.” The Open The Gate project from Fine Cell Work was the Highly Commended winner, for its work training prisoners in high-quality, creative needlework. The Commended winner was Offploy, which focuses on employment as one of the most effective ways to reduce reoffending. See the winner’s reaction videos here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: survey on reducing reoffending
Nacro is interested to learn from people working on the frontline in the criminal justice system about what they believe is important to have in place in order to reduce reoffending. Any resettlement staff working with prison leavers or practitioners supporting people with elements of resettlement, e.g. housing or education, training and employment, are invited to complete a short survey about what works well and what could be done better. The survey will close on Friday 14th May 2021. Complete it here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: young autistic people in the criminal justice system
The National Autistic Society, in partnership with the University of Kent, would like to invite those who work with people in contact with the criminal justice system to take part in its online survey. The survey focuses on young autistic people who are involved, or at risk of being involved in the criminal justice system. There are versions for autistic adults and family members to complete, so it can also be completed by the people you work with. The information gathered will be used in the National Autistic Society’s campaigns and future work. Take the survey here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: #SheMatters
Imago Dei Prison Ministry has launched a new website for its #SheMatters campaign. The aim of the campaign is to encourage others to extend compassion and end the stigma surrounding women who have been in contact with the criminal justice system. Imago Dei Prison Ministry is based in the South East and works with women in prison and once they leave prison through courses, mentoring and pastoral support. Find out more here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: prison leavers
Applications for the Prison Leaver Innovation Challenge will open on 10th May. The Prison Leaver Innovation Challenge is looking to harness innovation from the technology sector to develop new technological solutions to support people leaving prison and break the cycle of reoffending. The Ministry of Justice is calling on small and medium-sized enterprises that can support people leaving prison to apply for government funding of up to £350,000 to develop and test their solutions. The challenge will launch with a briefing event providing more information on the programme, its aims and the opportunities for suppliers [10th May, online, free]. Find out more here
FUNDING: people and communities of Kent
Grants of up to £5,000 are available from the Kent Community Foundation to local groups, organisations and charities for projects that benefit the people and communities of Kent in one of four priority areas: children, young people and families; elderly and isolated; vulnerable adults; or employability, skills and enterprise. Priority will be given to groups with an annual income up to £1 million. Find out more and apply by 31st May here
FUNDING: Merseyside and Wirral
Grants between £500 and £3,000 are available from Hemby Charitable Trust for registered charities working in the fields of social need, youth and employment, help for older people, the arts and the environment in Merseyside and Wirral. Applications must be for projects in Merseyside and Wirral and priority is given to projects benefitting the greatest number of residents in that area. Find out more and apply by 1st June here
CLINKS MEMBER’S TRAINING: functional skills
The Traveller Movement and Open Doors Education and Training are running a functional skills programme for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller young people not in education, training or employment [anytime, online, free]. Participants must be aged between 15-25 with a particular focus of those at risk of entering, or currently in, the criminal justice system. This programme provides one-to-one online tutoring in English and Maths and nationally recognised qualifications. It also equips Gypsy, Roma and Traveller young people with skills needed for further training or to enter the job market. All resources will be provided including technology. CLINKS MEMBER’S TRAINING: harmful online behaviour
The Social Switch Project Frontline Training has reopened spaces for its interactive CPD-accredited online course looking at harmful online behaviour [May-July, online, free]. This one-day course is aimed at professionals working with young people in London and delivered by Redthread and Catch22. The course aims to support professionals in dealing with harmful online behaviour and has already helped more than 700 professionals switch on to the language young people use, understand how to approach these conversations, and learn to encourage positive online behaviour. OPPORTUNITY: scholarships
The Longford Scholarships 2021 are open for applications from people who are or have been in prison and are planning to start a university degree course in September 2021. A non-repayable grant over the entire degree and a mentor will be awarded to successful applicants. Applicants must have served a prison sentence in the last five years or students in prison should be within six years of release. Apply before 4th June here
OPPORTUNITY: children with parents in prison
The International Coalition for Children With Incarcerated Parents Conference is inviting submissions for presentations, papers, workshops or symposia. The conference will run from 29th September to 1st October and will be held online. The global conference will attract youth advocates, researchers, educators, and attendees from around the world. RESEARCH: knife crime
Sussex Police has commissioned The Campaign Company (TCC), a market research organisation, to conduct research to help better understand the experiences and perceptions of knife carriers or users. TCC would like to speak to people aged 25-39 who have committed a knife-related offence. The work will help preventative police activity, including awareness and behavioural change campaigns, and inform partnership activity, to achieve the overall aim of reducing knife crime and the carrying and or using of knives in Sussex. Interviews are taking place now into the next two weeks. The interviews are anonymous and will be conducted via telephone, Zoom or in person for up to 45 minutes – whatever the participant is comfortable with.
