CLINKS EVENT: All Wales criminal justice meeting
Do you work with people in contact with the criminal justice system in Wales? Join us at our next All Wales criminal justice network meeting to meet others working across Wales, and discuss challenges and opportunities on the horizon [25th May, online, free]. At this meeting we will be reflecting on the Senedd and Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections that take place on 6th May, giving an overview of the new Welsh Government and the four police and crime commissioners elected in Wales. We will also have a Clinks policy update and an update from HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) in Wales, as well as the usual networking opportunities with voluntary sector organisations and statutory partners. Book your place here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: Female Offender Strategy
The Prison Reform Trust has published analysis which shows that the government has met less than half of the commitments identified in the Female Offender Strategy. The strategy, published in June 2018, has three priorities: 1) earlier intervention; 2) an emphasis on community-based solutions; and 3) an aim to make custody as effective and decent as possible for those women who do have to be there. Most of the promises made in the strategy remain unachieved or partially achieved nearly three years on. Of 65 deliverables, 31 have been fully achieved, 20 partially achieved, and there has been no progress or measurable implementation of 14. Read more here
CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: young women falling through the gaps
Agenda and the Alliance for Youth Justice have published a new briefing paper, Falling through the gaps, on the experiences of young women transitioning from the youth to adult criminal justice system as they turn 18. The briefing paper has been produced as part of the Young Women’s Justice Project which campaigns alongside young women to make a positive impact on policy and practice. The paper details how young women in contact with the criminal justice system face a cliff edge in support as they turn 18, with many services – including safeguarding, mental health and accommodation – changing all at once, and vital support reducing or dropping off. Many young women fall through the gaps and experience heightened vulnerability at this time. Read the full paper here

CLINKS MEMBER’S NEWS: prison education
The evidence submitted by Independent Monitoring Boards to the Education Select Committee inquiry on prison education has now been published. The submission presents findings from recent annual reports and regular updates provided by Independent Monitoring Boards since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since March 2020, education in prisons has been seriously affected by the measures taken in response to the pandemic. The quantity and quality of education delivery has been affected in all prisons, but those whose provision and management were strongest pre-pandemic, have been able to mitigate some of the damage and retain some elements of targeted individual learning. PUBLICATION: end of life care in prison
Hospice UK has published a report, Dying Behind Bars, highlighting inequality in end of life care for people in prison. A significant rise in deaths, together with an increasingly sick and older prison population, has led to a corresponding rise in need for end of life care - a need that the report says is not being adequately met. Despite people in prisons being legally entitled to the same healthcare and treatment as those on the outside, the experiences of older people in prison are much worse in comparison to those of the same age in the general population. RESOURCE: trustees with lived experience
This online resource from the Centre for Charity Effectiveness sets out some of the ways that voluntary sector organisations have adjusted and overcame barriers in order to reap the benefits of including trustees with lived experience of the organisation's cause on their boards. At its core is material gathered from a broad range of organisations that attended a Centre for Charity Effectiveness seminar on lived experience on nonprofit boards, held in November 2020. Sections to explore include: the benefits of lived experience on charity boards; the barriers to doing this well; and a range of approaches to overcoming the barriers. Read more here
