Is your organisation part of the Clinks women’s network? Do you have frontline staff or volunteers who are new to working or volunteering in your organisation and want to increase their understanding of why gender matters for women in the criminal justice system? If so, join us for this two part entry-level workshop.
The workshop aims to:
- develop understanding of women’s gendered experience of the criminal justice system and raise awareness of ‘a whole system approach’
Please note: this is not a skills-based course but develops knowledge. Topics covered: policy context; whole system approach; prevention and diversion; community supervision; custody; and resettlement.
It will be delivered online across two sessions on two consecutive days (Part One over 2 hours, Part Two over 3 hours) and uses a range of learning methods, some interactive.
Places are limited to a maximum of 20 participants.
Part one: Understanding the policy landscape for women
Monday 23 September 2024, 10:00 - 12:00
This part of the course will explain why a gendered approach matters for women in the criminal justice system and outline key national policies, including the Female Offender Strategy and Delivery Plan. It will provide insights into what is meant by a ‘whole system approach’ (WSA) for women. By the end of this part of the training you will:
-
Understand the reasons for a gendered approach
-
Have an overview of the Female Offender Strategy
-
Have insights into how the strategy is being implemented
-
Understand the different elements of a WSA
-
Understand what the National Concordat aims to achieve
-
See an example of how a WSA is being implemented in Wales
This session is not skills-based training but aims to develop knowledge and the sharing of best practice through group discussions and will involve active participation throughout.
Please be aware that this course uses a case study approach and contains details of traumatic experiences and tragic outcomes. We take this approach to root the workshop in women’s lived experiences and highlight the urgent need for systems change. However, we recognise that some of the events outlined in the case study may be triggering for some people. We do not want to cause harm and urge you to be aware of potentially triggering content when deciding to book a place on the training. If you would like to discuss this before deciding to book, please contact Jackie Lowthian, Women’s Network Coordinator jackie.lowthian@clinks.org. You will receive a copy of the case study for you to read in advance of the workshop.
Part two: Implementing gendered policy for women
Tuesday 24 September, 10:00 - 13:00
This part of the course will guide you through the elements of a WSA in practice whilst recognising that they are examples, and not uniformly implemented across England and Wales. This part of the training will provide you with:
-
Insights into some examples of diverting women out of the CJS
-
Considerations for women within community sentences
-
Appreciation of the importance of Pre-sentence reports (PSRs) for women and knowledge of new approaches, such as Intensive Supervision Courts (previously known as ‘problem-solving courts’)
-
Recognition of the challenges inherent in women’s prisons and an understanding of the implications for safeguarding and impact on children and, families
-
