CLINKS EVENT: creating change together
There's only a few tickets left for this year's conference [9th May, London, from £80]. Join us to discuss how we can create change together. People in the criminal justice system and their families are facing increasing challenges in getting the support they need to lead fulfilling lives. The voluntary sector’s role is more important than ever, but it too faces unprecedented challenges. Looking into the future, we need to work together to speak up on behalf of service users and communities, and to provide flexible services that meet changing needs. Our annual conference this year offers you a chance to network with others involved in similar work to you, build partnerships for the future and be inspired and encouraged by the work of others. CLINKS TRAINING: working and volunteering in prison
Are you new to working in prison? Do you want to work in prison but not sure where to begin? This one day course [16th May, Leeds, from £75] aims to raise awareness of the prison environment and enable voluntary sector staff and volunteers to have meaningful and professional engagement with prisons. The day combines theory, individual reflection and practical guidance as well as the opportunity to share experiences with others. The training will cover: an overview of the criminal justice system; an understanding of the prison environment and those in custody; an individual’s journey through the system and a guide to safe and responsible working within a custodial setting. CLINKS NEWS: join the RR3
Clinks is seeking a senior manager from a specialist women’s organisation to join the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3). We’re looking for someone with expertise and experience of providing tailored support to women in contact with the criminal justice system. The RR3 is a group of senior experts from the voluntary sector which meets quarterly to advise the Ministry of Justice and HM Prison and Probation Service and to help build a stronger and more effective partnership between the voluntary sector and the government. The Chair for the group and its secretariat is provided by Clinks. Applicants will need to submit a CV and covering letter by 9am Thursday 23rd May. Find out more here
CLINKS RESPONSE: inspection of probation providers
Clinks has published our response to the HM Inspectorate of Probation’s consultation on the inspection of probation providers. Our response encourages the inspectorate to better engage voluntary organisations in monitoring the effectiveness and progress of probation providers and to embed the role of the voluntary sector into the inspection standards. We also recommend that the inspectorate proactively looks at how probation providers are working to address disproportionality and unequal outcomes of those protected under the Equality Act (2010). Read our response here
CLINKS NEWS: Fundraising Support Officer
Rich McStraw has joined Clinks as our Fundraising Support Officer. Rich supports Clinks in its income generation through fundraising, primarily writing bids for charitable trusts and foundations. He co-ordinates the quarterly and annual reporting for existing funders, researches funding opportunities for Clinks and the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance, and ensures Clinks’ fundraising activities are compliant with relevant regulatory bodies. Rich has a background in fundraising compliance and individual giving, having worked at the British Heart Foundation previously. Meet the team here
CLINKS NEWS: treatment of women in Wales
Anne Fox, Clinks' Chief Executive Officer and Dr Jenny Earle, Director of Reducing Women’s Imprisonment at the Prison Reform Trust, gave oral evidence to the Welsh Justice Committee on the treatment of women in the criminal justice system in Wales. Anne stressed the need for effective funding for well-established trauma-informed women’s specific services, and for referral systems to be in place to ensure the needs of these women can be met. We have published the minutes from March's Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3) meeting. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: impact of loss in criminal justice
Revolving Doors Agency has released a podcast which highlights the impact of loss and bereavement among people in the criminal justice system, as well as opportunities and challenges professionals face in supporting them. The podcast brings together academics, practitioners and people with lived experience. While loss is a universal experience, people facing severe disadvantage, including those in contact with the criminal justice system, experience loss at a disproportionately higher rate than the general population. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: probation reform progress review
The House of Commons Committee of Public Accounts Transforming Rehabilitation: Progress Review report finds that the Transforming Rehabilitation reforms were rushed, costing more than they should and resulting in poor outcomes. It concludes that the speed of the reforms contributed to probation services being underfunded, fragile, and lacking the confidence of the courts. The report states, “The Ministry failed to involve voluntary sector organisations in delivering probation services on the scale it promised” and recommends that when announcing future plans the Ministry of Justice explains the role it expects the sector to play and to outline how it will improve specialist services. Read the report here. Clinks has recently reviewed and updated our position on the probation reform programme, read our blog here
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: adverse childhood experiences
Public Health Wales has published its Prisoner ACE Survey. It suggests Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are linked to people spending more time in prison, violent offending and a history of time in youth offender institutions. It finds male prisoners are much more likely than men in the wider population to have suffered childhood adversities such as child maltreatment or living in a home with domestic violence.
