CLINKS RESPONSE: Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities
Clinks has published a response to the Women and Equalities Committee inquiry into inequalities faced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities. The inquiry looked at the 28 commitments for tackling inequalities faced by Gypsies and Travellers published by a ministerial working group in 2012. Clinks’ response examines the specific inequalities faced by GRT people in the criminal justice system. It makes a number of recommendations based on consultation with the voluntary sector. These include improving consistency and practice around monitoring GRT people in the criminal justice system, ensuring that flexible and informal approaches to education are made available for GRT prisoners, introducing a Traveller group to each prison to reduce isolation for GRT prisoners, and providing a mechanism for feedback to prison staff and management. Read the response here
