Arts Alliance Newsflash | Write to be Heard deadline - act now!

Prisoner creative writing awards close next Friday - help us promote it!
Deadline: Friday 1st November 2013

The Write to be Heard creative writing awards closes on 1 November. This is our last push - can you help us promote it?

The Arts Alliance is working with National Prison Radio on a programme to encourage prisoners to write for broadcast. The programme is funded by NOMS and aims to encourage literacy development, self-expression and a link into education services. We have just completed a writing workshop roadshow in prisons across the country and, for extra inspiration, National Prison Radio is currently broadcasting tips, ideas and exercises from those events. The workshops have been targeted at prisoners less likely to be accessing education and following the workshops, some prisoners have continued to write.

All genuine entries will receive a certificate with special awards for featured work and those who have made an exceptional effort to enter. Top entries will receive feedback from judges such as the crime writer, Mark Billingham, poet, Dean Atta and Anne Owers, the ex-Chief Inspector of Prisons.

Entry forms and rules can be downloaded and copied and are also in the centre of this month’s ‘Inside Time’. If inspiration is needed, we have uploaded some exercises to start writers off. Completed entries must be countersigned and sent, with an entry form, to: Write to be Heard, National Prison Radio, HMP Brixton, SW2 5XF.

The deadline for receiving entries is 1 November, so if you are working with prisons, any help you are able to give us to encourage and support prisoners to enter will be gratefully received.
