He has more than 25 years of experience of the prison system including as a serving prisoner, a senior academic researcher, and currently as the Director of the Prison Reform Trust’s (PRT) National Lottery Community Funded Building Futures Programme.
He was awarded a D.Phil. (PhD) from the University of Oxford for research focusing on the interplay between masculinity, education, (un)employment, crime and imprisonment. He has written and published on prison masculinities, and is the author of British Society of Criminology prize winning book: Male, Failed, Jailed: Masculinities and "Revolving-Door" Imprisonment in the UK.
Since January 2020 he has led (PRT’s) Building Futures Programme that focuses how long sentences impact on people in prison, their families and wider communities. Working collaboratively with these groups the programme aims to provide solutions and shape a prison environment that is safe, humane, encourages accountability and fosters hope. It places a strong emphasis on promoting prisoner leadership and self-advocacy and the creation of inter-prisoner support networks.
