CLINKS RESPONSE: inspection framework

Clinks has responded to HM Inspectorate of Probation’s inspection framework and programmes consultation. We have drawn on evidence from our ongoing policy work and consultation with members. In our submission we have focused on the three key areas which we feel our knowledge and expertise best places us to provide feedback on. These are: HM Inspectorate of Probation’s engagement with voluntary sector organisations; probation providers’ engagement with voluntary sector organisations; and prioritising equalities in HM Inspectorate of Probation’s framework and programmes. CLINKS NEWS: join the advisory group on women

Clinks is recruiting a specialist member to the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3). The group meets quarterly with the purpose of building a strong and effective partnership between the voluntary sector and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), providing expertise and voluntary sector representation to the MoJ in relation to their policy developments. The role is reserved for an individual with expertise and experience of providing specialist support to women in contact with the criminal justice system. CLINKS TRAINING: working and volunteering in prison

We're offering two places for the price of one on our 'Working and volunteering in prison' training [9th August, York | 14th August, Taunton, from £75]. It will cover: a discussion on why you want to work in a prison and any worries you might have; an introduction to the criminal justice system; prison environment and population; reducing reoffending; safe and responsible working and what to expect in your first month. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: soft on crime

The CEO of Spark Inside, Baillie Aaron, has a TEDx talk online where she asks 'What if being soft on crime is good for society?' She explores the possibility that harsher prison conditions may have the unintended consequence of increasing crime; and suggests that if we truly want a safer society, we need to rethink the role of punishment in our prison system. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: funding support for resettlement

If you use the Hardman directory, the Hardman Trust would like feedback for their donors to prove that the resource is used, valued and being further developed. There is a short survey to complete. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: plays in prison

This Autumn Imagine If Theatre Company is embarking on a national theatre tour of 'You Forgot the Mince', a play exploring domestic abuse and coercive relationships. As part of this, it is currently looking for prisons interested in hosting a performance, and for probation services who wish to engage their service users in attending a theatre performance in return for a free workshop run by the cast and company. The play will be touring in up to ten prisons with an accompanying workshop with prisoners, exploring the play's themes alongside communication skills. Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: poetry from prison

The Koestler Trust is fundraising in order to publish 'The Koestler Collection Volume 1', a book of poetry written by prisoners. They intend to publish biennial anthologies, expressing the thoughts and feelings of people in prison. The pieces often give insights into living apart from friends and family, memories of home, and life in custody. The first volume will be published in September 2017. Find out more here

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: probation reform

Justice Secretary David Lidington has written an open letter in which he discusses probation reform. In the letter, he discusses how probation supports rehabilitation, and recognises the work that charities do to support this. He writes ' Probation services are assisted by an invaluable band of charities and volunteers as well as staff from local authorities, police and the NHS among others. They have all worked hard through the recent period of fundamental change in probation, driven by significant government reforms to this very complex public service'. Read the letter here

VOLUNTARY SECTOR: counter fraud pledge

Charity Finance Group has created the Counter Fraud Pledge to acknowledge the work that charities are doing to combat fraud and guide them through the steps to prevent fraud in their charities. Fraud is estimated to cost the charity sector £1.9bn every single year, to the detriment of the beneficiaries we serve. Find out more here

FUNDING: multiple and complex needs

A call for proposals has been issued under the European Social Fund (ESF) for Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, and Nottinghamshire. Grants from a minimum of £500,000 are available to run a project to support people with multiple and complex barriers to overcome them and promote active inclusion in the area. Applicants will need to have eligible match funding for the balance of costs, which must be from a source other than the European Union. Operations must be completed no later than 30th September 2020. The deadline for applications is 27th September. Find out more here

FUNDING: operating grants

The European Programme for Employment and Social Innovation (EaSI) has grants of between 100,000 and 1 million euros available to fund the operating costs and activities of networks which have EU added value and which contribute to the implementation of the objectives of the EaSI programme for the year 2018. Eligible activities include analytical activities, training activities, mutual learning, cooperation, awareness-raising and dissemination activities. The deadline for applications is 29th September. FUNDING: poverty and inequality

Trust for London has grants of up to £150,000 available to tackle poverty and inequality in London. Work should be long-term and strategic, and the funding can be for specific projects or for on-going costs. It can include housing projects, routes to paid work, advocacy work, immigration, campaigning, and supported living standards. The deadline for applications is 5th October. Find out more here

FEATURED VACANCY: Restorative Justice Manager

Belong is recruiting for a prison based Restorative Justice Manager position [£35,000 pro rata, part time, Surrey]. The role provides an opportunity for a reliable, organised, energetic restorative justice facilitator to join Belong's committed, specialist team. The successful applicant will have solid experience of working within the criminal justice system and preferably the prison service, with a track record of securing stakeholder engagement in programs and communicating effectively with individuals from a range of backgrounds. He or she will manage this project, and deliver—and support prison staff to deliver—restorative justice interventions. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 4th August 2017.
