CLINKS NEWS: the story of state of the sector

If you missed the event, you can now read a Storify of the state of the sector launch event. The state of the sector report looks at the results from a survey of over 200 voluntary organisations working in criminal justice, the financial analysis of 752 charities and 220 companies (social enterprises and community interest companies) and 10 in depth interviews. Storify summarises the social media activity from the day. Attended by Clinks' members, key stakeholders, including officials and trusts and foundations, and key voluntary sector figures, the report was presented at the event by Clinks' Senior Policy Officer Nicola Drinkwater and Lisa Hornung, Researcher for NCVO. The day included speakers from charities sharing their experiences, group facilitated discussions and two question and answer sections. We will be holding a live Twitter discussion around the themes of state of the sector report on Monday 24th July, at 11am. We’ve invited sector leaders, funders and other experts to join in, and we’ll use contributions to feed into our recommendations to government. The coalition campaigns for the diversion of people with mental health needs from custody into treatment and care. CLINKS PARTNER'S BLOG: drug strategy

In this blog Making Every Adult Matter Coalition, Agenda, AVA and Revolving Doors Agency respond to the government's Drug Strategy for 2017. They write 'There is a much-needed commitment to provide more support to people involved in the criminal justice system who have drug problems, particularly through liaison and diversion and drug rehabilitation requirements.' CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: supporting people with addictions

Adfam has published a practitioner's guide to supporting family members of people with drug or alcohol addictions. 'Making It Happen' brings together Adfam’s experience in family support, in consultation with family members, practitioners and commissioners around the country in a best practice guide aimed at commissioners and service managers. CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: supporting homeless people

Homeless Link has published three new practice guides: 'Taking action when someone dies while street homeless'; 'Supporting LGBTQ+ people in homelessness services'; and 'Supporting Couples'. Each of these guides tackles unique problems for this cohort, and offers practical advice to develop good practice. Find out more here

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: criminalisation of children

The Howard League for Penal Reform has published a briefing on 'Ending the criminalisation of children in residential care'. The briefing discusses how to reduce the rates of children in care who have contact with the criminal justice system. Children aged 16 and 17 in care are fifteen times more likely to be criminalised than other children of the same age. Read the briefing here

CLINKS MEMBER'S NEWS: stop and search

The Criminal Justice Alliance has published a report on the experiences and views of young black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people on stop and search. 'No Respect' consists of in-depth interviews and opinion from among BAME young people aged 16-30 in England and Wales. Research found that BAME people collectively are now three times more likely than white people to be searched. Find out more here

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: prison safety

HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, Peter Clarke has published the 2016 to 2017 annual report on prisons. The report is based on 86 individual inspection reports on prisons, police custody suites, immigration removal centres and other custodial establishments. The report found the majority of prisons to be underperforming in terms of safety, and raised serious concerns about the youth estate, with no establishment found safe to hold young people. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: prison deaths

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has published its 2016 to 2017 annual report. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman carries out independent investigations into deaths and complaints in custody. The report reviews the last year's performance. It finds that the number of prison deaths linked to new psychoactive substances has reached 79 in the last four years and that it had started investigations into a total of 361 deaths last year. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: parole backlog

The Parole Board has published its 2016 to 2017 annual report. The Parole Board's role is to make risk assessments about prisoners to decide who may safely be released into the community on parole, as well as moving offenders to low or medium security prisons from a high security prison. The report reviews the last years performance, and sets out how it is seeking to tackle the backlog of cases related to the increase in oral hearings, IPPs and a surge in recalls. Professor Nick Hardwick, Chair of the Parole Board for England and Wales said “The Parole Board is making good progress after a difficult period but there is still more to do.” Find out more here

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: placement with probation

HM Inspectorate of Probation is seeking a short term placement to join its inspection team for up to seven weeks to help plan, carry out and write up inspection findings. It is seeking someone who is able to work as part of a team with proven operational and strategic experience in probation supply chains. The deadline for applications is 2nd August. FUNDING: alcohol addiction

Alcohol Research UK's Small Grants programme offers grants for exploratory projects that address emerging issues in alcohol research, employ novel theoretical or methodological approaches, or pilot new work in treatment or service delivery. Grants of up to £8,000 are available for stand-alone projects that last for up to 12 months. Applications are accepted from researchers who are employed in the UK by organisations such as universities, colleges, other academic institutions, local authorities, voluntary organisations, police, probation and health authorities. The deadline for applications is 13th September. Find out more and apply here

FUNDING: core funding and free training

GSK’s IMPACT Awards reward charities that are doing excellent work to improve people’s health. Organisations must be at least three years old, working in a health-related field in the UK, with income between £80,000 and £2.5 million. Up to 20 awards will be made ranging from £3,000 to £40,000 plus free training valued at up to £6,000. Organisations will also have a film made, receive help with press and publicity and be given a set of promotional materials. The deadline for applications is 20th September. CLINKS MEMBER'S TRAINING: shared reading

The Reader is running courses to train people as Reader Leaders [various locations and dates, from £750]. The Reader runs Shared Reading groups in a range of settings including prisons, approved premises, high-security psychiatric hospitals, secure units and community justice initiatives. The four day course aims to teach the skills needed to run these groups, and once trained Reader Leaders can share literacy skills in a variety of settings. Find out more here

PUBLICATION: homeless people sidelined

The all-party parliamentary group for ending homelessness has published a report called 'Homelessness prevention for care leavers, prison leavers and survivors of domestic violence'. It makes a number of recommendations including; the government should set up a cross-departmental strategy led by Number 10 to tackle homelessness; The Ministry of Justice should hold an inquiry into homelessness among offenders released from prison, the impact of welfare reform on prison leavers and how the local connection criteria is used with prison leavers; and that The Department for Communities and Local Government and the Home Office should jointly fund Housing First schemes for domestic violence survivors. RESOURCE: prison health

WHO Europe with the UK Collaborating Centre for Health in Prisons Programme (hosted by Public Health England) is an online global network to exchange experience, expert advice and promote innovation in addressing health and healthcare inequalities facing people in prison. It has an open access collaborative forum called The Worldwide Prison Health Research & Engagement Network for everyone interested in prison health, aiming to build capacity through research and professional development. OPPORTUNITY: fundraising training

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and Tracey Crouch MP have launched Government free or low cost fundraising training for small/medium charities. Consisting of online, telephone and face to face options, there are 4,000 learning opportunities on offer until March 2018. The Foundation for Social Improvement will run the programme in partnership with the Small Charities Coalition, Localgiving and the Charities Finance Group. Find out more here
